A friend recently sent me a link to a poster series she came across online after noticing a striking resemblance to a series Adam&Co. designed last year for Nike and Lebron James.

This new series, produced by Dunn&Co. for their client the Tampa Bay Lightning, is inarguably a blatant appropriation of the original work that we created for Nike. Ours had been featured in several articles and award shows both online and in print, so it is not unlikely that the designer was familiar with our work.

From the border, the texture, and the grid pattern, to the line art, the treatment of the images, the type selection, down to the logo placement in the upper left-hand corner, they are essentially the same exact design. With the exception of a slight tweak in color, messaging, and photography, there is very little variation between the two.

There is a distinct difference between inspiration and appropriation, and in our business, it is essential to know that difference. While ideas may at times be inspired by various sources, it is our duty as creatives to re-invent them, making them new or original in some way.

Dunn&Co. claims to be an “ideas-led” agency, and while ideas are infinite, the one they led with here was plagiarism. The agency not only sold the work to their client as original, but they’ve gone on to promote the work on various design and advertising sites claiming it as their own.

I would like to take a moment to say to our clients and fans, past, present, and future, that Adam&Co. prides itself on only producing original work. It is a core part of our DNA that the work we create for our clients is unique to them. Yes, we are inspired by many different things, that is the beauty of what we do, but we never have and never will condone plagiarism.

Our intent with this message is to protect the integrity of our work and we appreciate you taking the time to read this. Please share or repost if you feel inclined to do so. Thank you for your continued support.

Thank you to the folks at AIGA’s Design Envy blog and James Grady of @fathominfo for the post on our poster collaboration with photographer Marcel Christ.

Excerpt below. You can see the full article here: Design Envy Blog

I recently came across this poster for Bassnectar by Boston-based designer and illustrator Adam Larson of Adam and Co and Amsterdam-based photographer Marcel Christ.

I have been a long-time fan of Adam’s work. I love the surreal and ethereal environments he creates within much of his illustrative work. I had an immediate visceral reaction to this aesthetic. It looks like the form is made from photographing ink or hot wax dropped into water. Although this technique is not new, I love the interplay of type and form as well as the stark contrast of the three-dimensional form against the black background. The poster captures a frozen temporal and spatial moment that reflects the the unpredictable freeform rhythms of Bassnectar’s music.

This project was recently completed so I have not found much documentation about the process. It makes me think that I’d really like to see if this form could be created through code. If this form could be created and manipulated through code, it would open up many possibilities. In the meantime, I think this poster is beautiful and I’d love to get my hands on a copy.
